Pipe Major

Joel Solak

Joel Solak was appointed Pipe Major of the Derwent Scottish Pipe Band in 2024 at the age of 29, becoming one of Tasmania’s youngest Pipe Majors and the eighth Pipe Major since the Band’s formation in 1952. As the state’s first openly gay Pipe Major, he has championed inclusive and progressive leadership within the pipe band movement while continuing the Band’s long-standing tradition of musical and community excellence.

Joel began learning the bagpipes at age 10 under Pipe Bands Australia, Hall of Fame inductee Mr Gary Webb and has since developed into a respected performer, educator, and leader within the Australian pipe band community. Alongside his piping development, he undertook formal classical music training and received Honours through the Australian Music Examinations Board, helping shape his disciplined and contemporary approach to music.

His performance career has included appearances nationally and internationally, including at the prestigious Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Joel has also performed at the opening of Tasmania’s inaugural MONA FOMA festival and appeared on national television programs, while regularly collaborating with musicians and supporting workshops and educational programs throughout Australia.

As Pipe Major, Joel has focused on strengthening the Band’s musical standards, culture, and long-term sustainability while maintaining its strong connection to the Tasmanian community. Under his leadership, the Band has continued its tradition of competition success, public performance, and community engagement.

Beyond the Band, Joel serves on the National Management Committee of Pipe Bands Australia and has contributed significantly to governance, strategic planning, education, and child safety initiatives across the Australian pipe band movement. His contributions have included supporting the establishment of the Australian Juvenile Championships, assisting with the redevelopment of the modern Winter Piping & Drumming Retreat, and helping oversee the wind-up of the McGee Foundation for the enduring benefit of Tasmanian pipers and drummers.

Joel is a recipient of the Peter Cook Scholarship and has twice been awarded Presidential Commendations by Pipe Bands Australia in recognition of his service to the movement.
